SB 957 would provide a way for all persons, including persons who are present in the United States without documentation -- to obtain a driving document under Illinois law. To obtain the document, an individual will need to produce a form of identification issued by their country of origin and evidence that they reside in Illinois. In return, drivers will be tested on their driving skills and rules of the road, and provide proof of insurance for their automobile.
Many undocumented persons fear interactions with police that begin with a simple traffic stop. In some communities, such stops can result in long detentions -- disrupting families and work . This measure will alleviate many of these unnecessary detentions and keep families from being unnecessarily upset and split apart.
