Immigration

The fundamental constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person, regardless of immigration status.

The ACLU of Illinois supports a system of immigration that embraces the American ideal of being a welcoming nation to newcomers and refugees. We oppose efforts to demonize and terrorize immigrants and newcomers to our nation through the use of dragnet sweeps by immigrations agents, as well as other enforcement schemes that unnecessarily disrupt communities and families and deny due process for individuals in the immigration court system. As the ACLU of Illinois advances comprehensive immigration reform ideas and principles, we will work in the courts and the legislature to ensure fair and constitutional treatment of all immigrants and refugees.
