The Red Eye has an article about the Chicago Police Department's announcement on Tuesday that some districts will start using body cameras on their officers beginning in the next two weeks. In the wake of the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, the ACLU of Illinois released guidelines on the potential use of body cameras by police departments. Body cameras are seen as a potential way to create transparency and protect both civilians and the officers themselves. The Red Eye spoke with Communications and Public Policy Director Ed Yohnka:
Yohnka is hopeful the camera program will be "a really powerful tool" for oversight, though he said the ACLU has suggested police record every interaction with a civilian, when reasonable.
"What we worry about is an interaction that begins innocently and escalates," he said.
