There is a proposal under consideration by the Clinton County Board regarding the location of a new public (government) health care center. HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital has proposed donating land in Breese for a new public health center, but the donation of the land requires that the public health center complies with the Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. This violates the First Amendment, and would severely restrict the type of care the public health facility could offer. The ACLU of Illinois took action by writing a letter to the Clinton County Board urging them to reject this proposal.
