The below statements are in reaction to the announced appointment of Maggie Hickey to serve as the independent monitor and the intended appointment of David H. Coar to serve as a Special Master for the consent decree:

“It is good to see the court has appointed a Monitor to oversee reform of the Chicago Police Department. Now is the time for the work to begin. As an active participant in the interview process, I believe the monitoring team understands the importance of transparency and community involvement in creating real reform of policing in Chicago.  Assuring transparency and community involvement are necessary to the success of this consent decree.”

Rev. Robert E. Biekman, leader of Community Renewal Society (CRS), Senior Pastor, Maple Park United Methodist Church & Urban Ministry Coordinator, Northern Illinois Conf., United Methodist Church

“Today’s announcement finally clears the way to begin the work carefully laid out in the consent decree. I look forward to meeting regularly with the Monitor and with the other members of the coalition to ensure that community input guides the process from day one.”

Eric Wilkins, leader of Communities United
