From the Washington Post:

For the first time, a federal judge today ordered the release of alleged enemy combatants from the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, ruling that the government had provided insufficient evidence to continue their detentions.

These men, Algerians who were detained in Bosnia after September 11th, have been imprisioned for seven years.

Let me repeat that - these men have been held, without trial, without being charged with a crime, for seven years. In the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

It's heartbreaking.

Join the call - Ask President-elect Obama to order the closure of the prison at Guantanamo his first day in office.

Update: The men ordered released include Lakhdar Boumediene, the named plaintiff in 2007's landmark habeas corpus case Boumediene v. Bush.

Hat tip, Glenn Greewald.

According to TalkingPointsMemo, the Obama transition team has already demonstrated it will be moving the country in a crazy, radical direction. They posted an organizational chart for the United States government:

And as you can see, not only has the president been demoted to a position under the constitution. But the vice-president (as shown by the red arrow) has had his own fourth branch revoked and been reassigned to the executive branch ...

Here's the chart in question.
