For years, the ACLU of Illinois has advocated for changes to the Chicago Police Department’s so-called gang database. What’s been publicly known about the CPD’s use of gang designations has shown them to be flawed – lists are filled with names of people who are not gang members, with no way for people to be removed. Our Police Practices Project sent a letter to Chicago’s Inspector General about his ongoing investigation of CPD’s standards and practices for determining and tracking gang affiliations.
