UPDATE 5/31/20: The legislative session was impacted due to COVID-19. We look forward to continue working on this issue during the next legislative session.

The Healthy Youth Act (HB 5012 and SB 3788) builds on current sexual health education standards in Illinois to include a full toolbox of knowledge and skills to support youth in responsible and informed decision making about their health and well-being throughout their lives. These topics include but are not limited to: anatomy and physiology; healthy relationships; identity; personal safety; pregnancy and reproduction; puberty, growth and adolescent development; and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

It also expands the current requirement that instruction be medically accurate, developmentally and age appropriate to include instruction that is also culturally and linguistically appropriate and adapted for students with disabilities and non-English speaking students. The bill also ensures that sexual health education in Illinois is inclusive and affirming of identities who historically have been stigmatized or excluded including LGBTQIA and pregnant or parenting youth.
