From the Washington Post:
For the first time, a federal judge today ordered the release of alleged enemy combatants from the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, ruling that the government had provided insufficient evidence to continue their detentions.
These men, Algerians who were detained in Bosnia after September 11th, have been imprisioned for seven years.
Let me repeat that – these men have been held, without trial, without being charged with a crime, for seven years. In the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
It’s heartbreaking.
Update: The men ordered released include Lakhdar Boumediene, the named plaintiff in 2007′s landmark habeas corpus case Boumediene v. Bush.
Hat tip, Glenn Greewald.
