Police Oversight

While most police officers perform their duties in a lawful manner, some police officers abuse their authority. Many police departments do not adopt sufficient safeguards to deter and detect such abuse. Accordingly, the ACLU monitors police activity, and challenges police misconduct. We file lawsuits on behalf of persons who are searched and detained in the absence of individualized suspicion, or targeted on the basis of their race, ethnicity, or religious or political beliefs. We lobby in favor of police accountability legislation, including the Illinois statute, sponsored by then-State Senator Obama, requiring the collection and analysis of statistical data about traffic stops, to deter and detect any racial profiling. We monitor police policies and training regarding discipline, weapons, and other matters, and meet with police officials to seek improvements. We educate the general public about their rights when interacting with police.
