What is a witness slip and how is it different than contacting your legislator?

Before a bill makes it to the floor for a vote by all legislators it must pass through a committee. In the committee a select group of legislators ask questions of the sponsor and advocates, and vote to either advance the bill out of committee or stop the bill at that point in the process. Since a committee does not include everyone’s legislator witness slips offer the opportunity for you to make your voice heard in support or opposition to a measure.
