Racial discrimination in policing is illegal and undermines public safety. We expect police to enforce laws in a neutral way, not targeting people based on race.

Illinois officially became the first state to abolish the unfair practice of jailing people accused of crimes simply because they cannot afford to pay a money bond.

Civil asset forfeiture laws allow the police to seize property that they suspect is involved in illegal activity. But these laws do not require that a person be convicted – or even charged – with a crime in order to lose their property permanently.
