Rights Under the SAFE-T Act

Document Date: December 16, 2025

In 2021, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Safety, Accountability, Fairness, and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act, a comprehensive bill that made changes to the criminal legal system and created new requirements for law enforcement officers, agencies, and departments.

Below are resources exploring the provisions in the SAFE-T Act related to use of force, body-worn cameras, and training that every law enforcement officer in the state of Illinois must follow. From new duties related to rendering aid and intervention, to changes in how tools like body-worn cameras must be used, these booklets and one pagers will equip you and your communities with the information you need to ensure you know your rights when interacting with law enforcement.

Throughout these resources, you will learn about some of the significant changes that were made under the SAFE-T Act and its trailer amendments that have increased the accountability measures for law enforcement officers in Illinois. If you have a question about these resources or the SAFE-T Act, or would like to request a Know Your Rights presentation on the SAFE-T Act, please reach out to Aisha N. Davis at adavis@aclu-il.org.
