Statement on Approval of SB 3415 by Senate Criminal Law Committee

Earlier this evening, the Senate Criminal Law Committee approved Senate Bill 3415, a measure that continues the practice of collecting information about traffic stops in Illinois. The policy has been in place for more than a decade and was first championed by then-State Senator Barack Obama.

The following can be attributed to Khadine Bennett, Director of Advocacy and Intergovernmental Affairs, American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois:

"We are pleased that the Committee has advanced this bill, moving one step closer to continuing data collection about traffic stops in Illinois. This data has been good for the public and the police. The public gets a transparent look at how law enforcement uses its authority on our streets and highways and the police get valuable data for managing individual officers. We thank Senator Kwame Raoul for guiding this measure through the Committee and look forward to full consideraton on the Senate floor."
