Earlier today, the Illinois House Executive Committee approved Senate Bill 2090. The bill expands the opportunity to vote for person being detained pre-trial and provide those leaving prisons in Illinois with a voter registration application and a “know your rights guide” tailored to people with records.
The following can be attributed to Khadine Bennett, Advocacy and Intergovernmental Affairs Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois:
“We are one step closer to ensuring that all eligible voters in Illinois will be able to exercise their right to vote and receive the information they need to access the ballot box. By providing individuals with a voter registration application and a know-your-rights guide, the Illinois Department of Corrections and the county jails will help individuals with records successfully re-enter into society.
We thank Chief House Sponsor Representative Emanuel Chris Welch for his leadership in advancing this legislation and we look forward to its passage in the full House.”
