In an opinion piece for The Hill’s Congress Blog, Laura Murphy, director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office, advocates for Congressional support and passage of The Smarter Sentencing Act.  The legislation, introduced by Senator Richard Durbin (D-Ill) and Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) would reduce current maximum sentencing laws and give judges greater sentencing flexibility. Murphy outlines the tragic consequences of one-size fits all sentencing laws.  She argues that:

“Extreme, one-size-fits-all sentencing has caused our federal prison population to balloon out of control, and it’s the top reason why our country has earned the dubious title of the world’s biggest jailer. Several recent reports have confirmed that mandatory minimum sentences like those that would be shortened by the Smarter Sentencing Act are a major contributor to the growing federal prison population.”
