Legal Director Harvey Grossman wrote an op-ed for the Chicago Sun-Times about the inequities in police deployment when looking at white neighborhoods as compared to African-American and Latino neighborhoods in Chicago. Independent studies claim that Chicago police respond to violent crimes more frequently and urgently in white neighborhoods. The ACLU of Illinois is calling for transparency in the interest of a full evaluation and is formally requesting the City of Chicago disclose data on police deployment and 911 backlogs.
No one can arrive at an informed position on these questions without relevant data. The American Civil Liberties Union and others have tried unsuccessfully for months to obtain the necessary information. Emanuel agrees that perception is an important aspect of public safety, but we cannot determine the real facts and feel safe if we are kept in the dark.
Police deployment must be dealt with in an open, honest manner.
