The following can be attributed to Benjamin Ruddell, Director of Criminal Justice Policy, ACLU of Illinois:

“Today’s action on a trailer bill addressing clarifications of the SAFE-T Act will result in the end of the money bond system in Illinois beginning in January 2023. Detention while awaiting trial should never have depended on one’s wealth – and that soon will end.

We commend legislators for cutting through the hyperbole, misinformation, and efforts to confuse the impact of ending money bond, instead delivering a measure of fairness to the criminal legal system in Illinois. It is time to move forward.”
