“Once again, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has repeated knowingly false assertions about crime in Chicago. He pushes this misinformation over and over in order to block much-needed reforms and to encourage unlawful strong-arm tactics. Sessions creates the incorrect impression that the only answer to crime is unconstitutional practices by police. This attitude and the malicious repetition of false information demeans the office of Attorney General. Chicago should reject this harmful rhetoric.
Just this week, Chicagoans finally saw a long-awaited video showing a CPD officer shooting Ricky Hayes, an unarmed teenager with disabilities who was lost from home. Even though that officer then lied about that encounter, he still sits on desk duty. This is why the ACLU of Illinois supports a strong consent decree in order to bring about essential reforms and new training to the CPD and to improve interactions between police and people with disabilities and communities of color.”
