March 5, 2008 - Urgent update on illegal spying!
Join us March 5th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Schaumburg (1551 Thoreau Drive) for an emergency briefing.
Congress is back after a President's Day recess, but the White House still is seeking to block any investigation into the warrantless wiretapping program ordered by President Bush. The House and Senate shortly will consider legislation on this issue.
The ACLU of Illinois will be hosting an emergency conference call to update and mobilize our members for the fight. Ed Yohnka the Director of Communications and Public Policy for the ACLU of Illinois will present an update on the ACLU's fight against granting large telecommunication companies immunity from civil lawsuits challenging their collaboration in spying on innocent Americans. Learn how you can help in this fight!
You are invited to join us in person at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel (1551 Thoreau Drive). The conference call will begin promptly at 7. Check for the room number on your way in through the lobby. If you plan to attend the briefing at the Renaissance Schaumburg, please RSVP to Allie Carter at acarter@aclu-il.org.
If you would prefer to call in, the number is 1-800-214-0745 and the password is 226749#.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation.
We have one last chance to stop passage of FISA reforms granting immunity to telecommunications companies that illegally spied on their customers for the Bush Administration. If immunity is approved, we will never know the nature and extent of illegal warrantless wiretapping conducted at the direction of the White House. We must tell the House not to cave on protecting our civil liberties.
In the meantime - here's what you can do to help:
