Please join us for Volunteer Night in May! Volunteer nights are a great opportunity to meet other civil liberties fans, learn more about the ACLU's agenda and discover other opportunities to volunteer.
May 19th will be an especially good evening to attend volunteer night: Staff Attorney Karen Sheley will be giving a short talk about state secrets doctrine, and its use by the administration to block important civil liberties litigation on national security issues.
We'll also have numerous opportunities to sign up to help at events throughout the summer, as well as delicious food and genial conversation with fellow ACLU supporters.
Volunteer Night is held at the ACLU offices (180 N Michigan, Suite 2300 in Chicago) from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dinner is provided, but you must RSVP to attend, either by emailing acarter@aclu-il.org or by registering at http://action.aclu.org/ilvolunteer.
We hope to see you this month!

This year, one of the summer events on the line-up for ACLU of Illinois is Chicago's annual Race Judicata. Various law firms, attorneys, and individuals from across Chicago will gather on July 22nd to run in the 2010 "Sprint for Justice", and we here at the ACLU of Illinois will be among them. The race benefits Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS), an organization dedicated to "ensuring that the law works for everyone, not just those who can afford it."
So why do we run (or walk) in the Race Judicata? It helps the get the word out about the ACLU, and brings in new members. Last year, our fancy Lady Liberty crowns caught the eye of the race photographer, and a picture of our smiling faces (and our ACLU t-shirts and hats) made it into a photo spread in the journal of the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. But most of all - it's a great time to get some exercise and have fun with your fellow civil libertarians.
So join The ACLU of Illinois' Race Judicata team! The cost is $36.15, and you'll get to run (or walk) a scenic course from Upper Hutchinson Field along Lake Michigan and back, enjoy an after party that includes a performance by Chicago's own My Bad Blues Band and free drinks and snacks, and you'll receive a fancy ACLU foam Liberty crown, an ACLU of Illinois t-shirt (so you can sport your ACLU pride) AND a stylish Race Judicata 2010 t-shirt.
To Register: Visit https://www.signmeup.com/site/reg/register.aspx?fid=6X2V1K7. Make sure you select "Joining a Team" on the first page - and the ACLU of Illinois from the team list on page 2!
We look forward to seeing you at the Race!
