The following statement can be attributed to ACLU of Illinois Executive Director Colleen K. Connell:

It is sad to learn of the passing of Abner Mikva, one of this nation’s most conscientious, considerate and committed public servants of the past half century. As a young member of the Illinois legislature, Judge Mikva helped adopt a modernized – and humane – criminal code and worked tirelessly to adopt a new mental health code.

Elected to Congress, Judge Mikva served with distinction on two powerful committees – the Ways and Means Committee and the Judiciary Committee. A fierce champion for individual rights while in Congress, he earned a 100% rating from the ACLU for most of his congressional terms. He also served in the judiciary as a member of the DC Court of Appeals, often called the nation’s second highest court, and as White House Counsel for President William J. Clinton.

Abner Mikva was a giant in the law, in the government and in this community. His personal commitment to helping others, to giving back and to protecting the rights of all persons will be missed. His legacy leaves an inspiration for each of us to follow.
