The release of the video capturing the shooting death of Cedric Chatman in 2013 is one more indication of the City of Chicago’s failure to provide prompt and transparent investigations of police misconduct. The City should adopt a policy of promptly releasing videos capturing incidents of alleged excessive force. The public should not have had to wait three years for the release – long after the City decided not to discipline the officers involved. This video serves as a stark reminder of the need for the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct a comprehensive, but swift, review of policing in Chicago. For the Chatman family, we hope that this video release will be another catalyst for real reform.
