Chicago Police should disclose the files of their questionable infiltration of meetings in which the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) planned a peaceful demonstration at a major international business conference in November 2002, according to a petition filed in federal court today. read more »
Clarifying objections to the Patriot Act

Steve Chapman's recent column discussing the debate over the renewal of portions of the USA Patriot Act correctly notes the American Civil Liberties Union's belief that most of the provisions of the Patriot Act are "unobjectionable from a civil liberties point of view." We do, however, have very strong objections to a handful of provisions in the Patriot Act. read more »

As a lawyer, I was appalled by David Brooks' distortion of the legitimate role that the Constitution, and the Supreme Court, play in protecting fundamental rights. I was even more appalled by his attempt to blame Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun for the vitriol that has coarsened political discourse. Blackmum was a Solomon-like jurist who took great care in his Roe opinion to recognize and respect the values of those opposed to abortion. read more »
