ACLU Hails Chicago Council Vote Calling on Review of USA PATRIOT ACT

The Registry allows same-sex couples living in Chicago and suburban Cook County to register with the county. Partners will receive a domestic partnership certificate.

HOW TO REGISTER:
  • Both partners appear at the Cook County Clerks office on 118 N. Clark Street
  • Present valid photo identification
  • Pay $30 cash filing fee
  • Complete and sign a legal affidavit declaring that the couple is in a close and committed relationship of mutual financial and emotional support and intend to remain in such a relationship
WHAT THE REGISTRY DOES:
  • Provides an official record and public recognition of same-sex couples who share a family life in a committed relationship
  • Provides companies and other organizations having domestic partnership benefit programs with clear evidence of a couples intimate and lasting relationship
  • Provides a standard definition of domestic partnership for companies to use
WHAT THE REGISTRY DOES NOT DO:
  • Does not by itself create new legal rights
  • Does not require companies and organizations to provide domestic partnership benefits programs
  • Does not guarantee successor guardianship rights. In order to establish the right of a partner to become the successor guardian of a child or a disabled person, couples should consider filling out a Petition to Appoint Successor Guardian form. The form is available at: http://gac.state.il.us/forms.html.
  • Does not guarantee authority over financial or property management decisions. In order to establish the right of a partner to make decisions regarding the property, finances, or estate of a domestic partner who is unable to make these decisions, couples should consider filling out a Durable Power of Attorney for Property form. The form is available at: http://gac.state.il.us/forms.html.
  • Does not guarantee authority over health care or personal care decisions. In order to establish the right of a partner to make decisions regarding the medical treatment and care of a domestic partner who is unable to make these decisions, couples should consider filling out a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care form. The form is available at: http://gac.state.il.us/forms.html.
Although the Registry does not create new legal rights, domestic partners can use other legal channels to protect their rights and interests. These channels allow you to authorize another person to handle your personal and business affairs in the event that you are unable. Please contact an attorney to find out what legal steps are right for you. You can also find more information at: http://www.state.il.us/aging/1abuselegal/legal_adv-directives.htm.
