The Clock is Ticking! Register Today for Our April 9th Summit Meeting and Get Information on How to Communicate about Civil Liberties Issues

Do you ever get frustrated when trying to communicate with others about important civil liberties issues? If the answer to any of this question is "yes," you should sign up today for the Emergency Summit to Discuss Attacks on our Constitution. The meeting is intended for all ACLU of Illinois members and other persons in Illinois interested in defending our constitutional values. The Emergency Summit will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Hawthorn Suites and Conference Center (located at 101 Trade Centre Drive) in Champaign. The Emergency Summit will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. For more information on the event -- and to register -- please go to www.aclu-il.org/conference.

The program for this event is very exciting. One of the most critical sessions will focus on ways to communicate with the public and with opinion leaders about our constitutional values. Kate Stewart, a nationally-recognized communications' consultant from the Washington-based firm Belden, Russenello and Stewart, and Tom Kacich, editorial page editor for the Champaign News Gazette will be part of the program.

Already, more than 250 ACLU of Illinois members and supporters have registered for the Summit. We still have room for approximately 100 more. Time is running out! Register Today!

Two Upcoming Events in Chicago to Focus on Civil Liberties Issues

We recently learned of two important upcoming events that touch on critical civil liberties issues. On Tuesday, April 5th, University of Toledo Law Professor David Harris will appear in Chicago to discuss his new book, Good Cops. The book discusses the concept of "preventive policing," described as a new approach to law enforcement that "builds bridges between police officers and the citizens they protect." Professor Harris previously has written about the problems of racial profiling -- a practice that undermines the relationship between police and citizens. David Harris will be speaking on Tuesday, April 5th, at 5:30 p.m. in the Congress Lounge at Roosevelt University located at 430 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. On Thursday, April 7th, Reverend Barry Lynn, Executive Director of Americans United will appear to discuss "Should We Be a Theocracy or Democracy? Are we in Danger of Slipping from One to the Other?" The address will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Sholom, 3480 North Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. Admission is free and open to the public.
