Free Speech Prevails on University of Illinois Campus -- Students and Faculty Can Talk to Prospective Student Athletes on Chief Illiniwek

A federal appellate court in Chicago ruled in favor of ACLU of Illinois clients on June 1, 2004, upholding the ability of a group of faculty and students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to communicate with prospective student-athletes about the use of the Chief Illiniwek mascot at University sporting events. The case grew out of a university-wide, March 2001 email directive from the then-U of I chancellor mandating that students and faculty members wihsing to voice their objections or concerns about the continued use of Chief Illiniwek must seek pre-clearance from the Athletic Department. The Patriot Act and Politics -- Part II

We told you in our last edition that the Bush-Cheney campaign had rolled out a series of television advertisements that criticize Senator John Kerry for his call to change or reform parts of the Patriot Act, adopted less than 45 days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. To follow up on the advertisements, Vice President Dick Cheney set off across the country in a series of speeches on the topic. When the campaign came to Illinois, the ACLU responded.
