The Patriot Act and Politics - 2004

It was just a matter of time until the USA PATRIOT Act became part of the 2004 presidential campaign. This week, the Bush-Cheney campaign rolled out a series of television advertisements that criticize Senator John Kerry for his call to change or reform parts of the Patriot Act, adopted less than 45 days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As the ACLU National DC office pointed out in a press release, the advertisements are misleading -- misdating some of the Patriot Act's provisions -- and fail to note that a number of Republican and Democrat members of the Senate and House have called for reform of the Patriot Act. Indeed, one piece of legislation, the Safety and Freedom Assured Act or SAFE, is being co-sponsored in the Senate by Republicans Larry Craig, Michael Crapo and John Sununu as well as by our own Democratic Senator Richard Durbin. Need a Speaker?

Do you have a community, church, social or academic group that needs a speaker for an upcoming event? How about including someone from the ACLU of Illinois? The ACLU sends out staff and members to speak on a variety of topics, from reproductive freedom and gay rights to issues raised by the Patriot Act and other post-September 11th Bush Administration actions. We are very fortunate right now to have the services of former Executive Director Jay Miller, who is an excellent speaker and a great historian of the civil liberties' movement. If you are interested in a speaker, please contact us at ACLUofIllinois@aclu-il.org.
