ACLU of Illinois Executive Director Colleen Connell Named One of "Most Powerful" in the Law
This week, the Chicago Sun Times is running a special section on Chicago's most powerful women. The special looks at powerful women in the Arts, in politics (which included ACLU of Illinois Board Member and Illinois House Majority Leader Barbar Flynn Currie) and other areas of expertise. Today's edition contains those recognized as the most powerful in the area of law, including someone we know well -- ACLU of Illinois Executive Director Colleen Connell. You can read more about the series and Colleen by going to http://www.suntimes.com/special_sections/powerful_women/index.html#nonprofits.
ACLU Responds to Proposal to Create "Secret Police"
If you have been watching the coverage of the 9/11 Commission hearings, you know that there has been a good deal of conversation inside the Beltway about creating a new domestic spying agency separate from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. President Bush hinted earlier in the week that he might be amenable to such a proposal. In an odd twist, the ACLU suddenly found itself in complete agreement with the Justice Department officials and the leadership in the FBI from both the Clinton and Bush Administrations in rejecting this proposal. You can read more about the ACLU's views on this issue by going to http://www.aclu.org/SafeandFree/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=15462&c=206l.
The Date is Drawing Near! ACLU of Illinois to Host Breakfast in Washington D.C. as Part of the March for Women's Lives!
The date is drawing near for your opportunity to gather with others and show your support for reproductive freedom! The ACLU of Illinois is putting together a delegation from the state to participate in the national March for Women's Lives, scheduled for Sunday April 25th on the National Mall in Washington. We believe the March provides a critical opportunity for men, women, children and families to make clear to legislators and policy-makers in Washington that the vast majority Americans want unfettered access to a full range of health care services for women -- including abortion services. As part of this important event, the ACLU of Illinois has scheduled a pre-March breakfast with members of the Illinois congressional delegation, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Renaissance Hotel, 999 Ninth Avenue in Washington. You can learn more about the March and make reservations for the breakfast at http://www.aclu-il.org/marchforwomen/.
