Tell Durbin and Obama: Don't Let Lawbreakers off the Hook
If you have 2, 5 or 10 minutes to give today, your senators need to hear from you.
We are headed into a crucial stage of the battle to fix the terrible FISA mess that Congress created this summer when it handed the Bush administration expanded power to spy on Americans.
The good news is that one of your Senators, Barack Obama (D-IL), has pledged to support a filibuster of any bill that caves in to President Bush’s demand that Congress let phone companies off the hook for their willing cooperation with the administration’s illegal domestic spying program.
But we still need to make sure Senator Obama follows through and stops Congress from rubberstamping George W. Bush’s plan to whitewash activities like handing over Americans’ phone calls and emails without a warrant.
We also need to keep the pressure on your other Senator, Richard Durbin, to reject Bush's telecom immunity plan. Lawsuits that could put a stop to future legal and constitutional violations -- and expose the truth -- must move forward.
Here's what you can do:
If you have 2 minutes: Email your senators to demand action against Bush's telecom immunity plan.
If you have 5 minutes: Call Senator Durbin's office at 202-224-2152. Ask them to oppose telecom immunity and demand individual warrants for Americans. You can log your calls here.
If you have 10 minutes: Call Senator Obama at 202-224-2854. Tell their office to make sure no bill with telecom immunity moves forward in the Senate.
The issue of telecom immunity is important because Bush isn’t just aiming to let the telecoms off the hook. He wants Congress to bury the truth, which would let him off the hook. Let’s be clear about something: After engaging in an illegal, secret surveillance program, President Bush in no position to make demands of anyone. Telecom immunity must be taken off the table.
In addition to telecom immunity, the ACLU is asking Senators to reject sweeping up the private information of Americans in a broad net of surveillance. That means rejecting tactics like basket "warrants," which aren’t really warrants at all since they do not require specific individuals to be the targets of suspicion.
Senator Obama has committed to standing against legislation that lets telecom companies off the hook. And Senator Durbin is in a unique position, with an undecided vote on this critical issue. Your action today is critical to protect the rule of law and our privacy.
Time is limited: Please, take action now. Tell your senators to reject telecom immunity and unconstitutional surveillance. And thank you for standing with us.
