Lobbyists for the telecommunications companies are working with friends on the Hill to add language to legislation that would immunize - i.e., forgive - those companies for cooperating with government agencies to violate the privacy of innocent Americans. The ACLU of Illinois filed a lawsuit against AT&T for revealing personal phone records to the government, a lawsuit brought on behalf of renowned journalist Studs Terkel, public health care advocate Dr. Quentin Young and others.

If the telecommunications companies can slip their three sentence "immunization" language into a bill in the middle of the night during this lame duck session, our lawsuit and other similar lawsuits would be dismissed before a court could review the legality of the telecoms activities.
