Tell Senators Durbin and Obama to Oppose Judge Alito

Tell Dick Durbin and Barack Obama to Oppose Judge Alito

The nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr. to the Supreme Court of the United States is being considered in the United States Senate. Supporters of the Bush White House and Judge Alito are targeting our United States Senators with phone calls in support of the nomination. Please call and tell Senator Durbin and Senator Obama that the people of Illinois will not tolerate Alito's fundamental disregard for civil liberties and civil rights.

ACTION NEEDED - Call Senator Durbin and Senator Obama and urge them to OPPOSE the Alito nomination.

You can reach Senator Durbin at the following numbers:
Chicago -- (312) 353-4952; Springfield -- (217) 492-4062; Marion -- (618) 998-8812

You can reach Senator Obama at the following numbers:
Chicago -- (312) 886-3506; Springfield -- (217) 492-5089; Marion -- (618) 997-2402

Judge Alito has been a strong advocate of unchecked presidential powers. In light of the recent revelations about how the Bush Administration is violating federal law by authorizing the National Security Agency to spy on American citizens without court approval and the overreaching power the White House is seeking with the Patriot Act, Americans should be very concerned about this nomination.

Expressing serious concerns about unchecked executive power and Alito's troubling record on civil liberties and civil rights issues, the ACLU National Board of Directors voted to oppose Judge Alito's nomination. The ACLU has opposed only two Supreme Court nominees in its history: Justice William Rehnquist (in his initial nomination to the Court) and former Solicitor General and law professor Robert Bork.

Judge Alito would replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, considered a moderate voice and a critical swing vote on civil liberties and civil rights issues.

The ACLU has written a report documenting Judge Alito's record on civil rights and civil liberties that can be found at: http://www.aclu.org/scotus/2005/23216res20051222.html.

Please call our Senators today and PLEASE let us know if you are able to make the call. Our efforts to communicate with legislators are enhanced if we know the volume of calls that legislators are getting on particular issues.

Thanks for your help in this matter and thanks for joining us in working to protect our basic constitutional values!
