Please Pass this Message Along to Your Friends in Naperville!
February 18, 2005
Dear ACLU of Illinois Action Alert Member,
All Naperville residents have an opportunity to speak out to challenge the Patriot Act. Come to the Naperville City Council Meeting on Wednesday, April 6th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Naperville Municipal Center located at 400 South Eagle Street. If you want to support the movement to oppose the Patriot Act, PLEASE WEAR ORANGE! If you wish to speak, please plan to arrive by 6:45 p.m. to sign up.
In January, we contacted you about an effort to present a resolution to the Naperville City Council asking the Congress to repeal the most egregious portions of the USA PATRTIOT Act. The Patriot Act, adopted by Congress only 45 days after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, significantly expands the ability of federal law enforcement officials to conduct intrusive searches into the lives of average Americans while reducing judicial oversight of these intrusive activities.
More than 367communities, and four states, have adopted such resolutions, including Chicago, Oak Park, Evanston, Glencoe and Carbondale. You can view the entire list at http://www.aclu.org/SafeandFree/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=11294&c=207.
With your help, Naperville could be added to this list of communities. On February 1, 2005, Naperville resident William Assmus attended the Naperville City Council meeting and made a presentation to the Council asking for a resolution in support of civil liberties - a resolution putting the Naperville City Council on record calling on Congress to revisit and reconsider the most intrusive portions of the Patriot Act. Now, William needs your help - attend the April 6th meeting and speak your mind about the need for Naperville to speak to this critical issue.
If you are unable to attend the April 6th meeting, we suggest you send a letter to the Naperville City Council members before the meeting. You can find more information about that Council at http://www.naperville.il.us/dynamic_template.cfm?doc_id=54.
