Patriot Act Forum in Carbondale
Southern Illinois Residents:
Forum in Carbondale to
Discuss the USA PATRIOT Act!
Panel to Take Place tomorrow evening on SIU Campus
December 1, 2003
Dear Southern Illinois ACLU of Illinois Action Alert Member,
On Tuesday evening, Dec. 2nd, The Southern Illinois Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Jackson County League of Women Voters will sponsor a forum on the Patriot Act. Many communities around the U. S., including Chicago, have adopted resolutions opposing this Act and its possible extension, and the Carbondale City Council will soon be presented with a resolution modeled after those passed by other cities. In view of this, the ACLU and the League have organized a panel representing varying viewpoints on the Act and its national and local implications.
Participating will be: Ms. Carla Coppi, Associate Director of International Students and Scholars, who is an immigration specialist dealing with the problems of international students at SIUC; Prof. James E. Duggan, Research Librarian, SIU Law School, as well as President of the Shawnee Library System Board and member of the Carbondale Public Library Board, who will address surveillance of library patrons under the Act; Assistant U. S. Attorney Thomas Leggans, who will address enforcement of the Act in local and national contexts; and ACLU Communications Director Edwin Yohnka, who will present the ACLU’s point of view on the Act.
The forum will take place at 7:30pm on December 2nd in the Museum Auditorium of Faner Hall on the SIUC campus. Local residents are invited to attend and inform themselves about this important and controversial piece of legislation.
