September 29, 2003
Dear ACLU of Illinois Action Alert Member,
This Wednesday, October 1st, the Chicago City Council is set to consider a resolution calling on Congress to repeal the most egregious portions of the USA PATRTIOT Act. The Patriot Act, adopted by Congress only 45 days after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, significantly expands the ability of federal law enforcement officials to conduct intrusive searches into the lives of average Americans while reducing judicial oversight of these intrusive activities. More than 175 communities, and three states, have adopted such resolutions. Chicago would be the largest city in the nation to go on record in opposition to this sweeping legislation.
We hope you will make your voice heard on this critical issue! Contact your Alderman and let them know that you support the resolution. If you do not know your Alderman, or their contact information, you can learn more at http://www.ci.chi.il.us/CityCouncil/.
