Patriot Act
Just 45 days after the September 11 attacks, with virtually no debate, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act. Many parts of this sweeping legislation take away checks on law enforcement and threaten the very rights and freedoms that we are struggling to protect.
What the Patriot Act means to you:
- The government has the right to break into your home, invade your privacy and rifle through your possessions
without showing probable cause.
- The government can spy on the books you read, the internet sites you visit and the credit card purchases you make without
you even knowing it happened.
- The government can launch FBI investigations justified by nothing more than a law-abiding person's exercise
of his or her First Amendment rights.
- The judicial oversight that the Constitution put in place as a check on out-of-control government power is rendered meaningless.
