We oppose the broken, unfixable death penalty system and support making permanent the moratorium on executions in Illinois. The death penalty is administered arbitrarily and fails to deter crime or improve public safety. And, during particularly challenging fiscal teams, the death penalty is expensive and utilizes funds that could be used to strengthen law enforcement and compensate victims’ families. For more than a decade, Illinois has not executed a prisoner because the system was so flawed that 20 innocent men have been released from Illinois’ death row. Illinois tax payers, however, continue to pay to support the death penalty system, even as events demonstrate that the “reforms” put in place to “fix” the system were not enough to ensure that innocent people were not put to death.
