CBS reported on Governor Pat Quinn singing the Facebook bill, which, when put in effect on January 1, will bar employers from asking job applicants and employees for passwords to their social networking accounts. While some argue that employers need to have access to these passwords to fully judge who they are hiring, ACLU Communications and Public Policy Director Ed Yohnka disagrees.
“There are all sorts of investigative devices that, of all people, law enforcement has to examine and think about the backgrounds of the people that they hire,” he said. “What they don’t need to know is what they think about politics or other things, which are often the kinds of things people post on their Facebook account.”
