On Monday January 31, Governor Quinn signed SB1716, the “Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act.” This bill allows both same-sex and different-sex couples to enter into civil unions and receive some of the benefits of marriage, such as the right to visit a partner in the hospital and make medical decisions. However, the law does not prohttp://www.aclu-il.org/wp-admin/post-new.phpvide all the same benefits of marriage because of the differences in state and federal legislation.
What other rights, benefits, and protections does the law provide? How exactly does the law differ from marriage? You are invited to attend “Financial Impact of the Illinois Civil Unions Act.” These questions, and other financial concerns, will be discussed. Speakers include Jill Metz of Metz & Associates and Bernard Cherkasov of Equality Illinois. The event is open to the public and will be held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (230 S LaSalle St google map) on Tuesday April 5th, from 6 PM to 8PM. Attendees may enter and sign in as early as 5 PM.
