Legal Volunteer and Intern Information
Law Student Employment and Volunteer Opportunities
There are many opportunities for law students to work with lawyers at the ACLU of Illinois. We have an active docket
of over 40 cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts, including the Illinois and U.S. Supreme Courts.
There are summer and school-year positions, and a limited number of funded positions.
Applicants should send the following materials to Adam Schwartz at the mailing address on this website:
- Cover Letter
- Resumé
- Writing Sample
- Transcript
- Reference List
Please apply as early as possible; offers are extended as qualified people apply. Priority is given to
law students who have completed their second year of law school. We are an affirmative action employer.
Legal Department - Non-Law Students
Internships for two or three undergraduate college students or high school students are available in the
legal department, though limitations apply.
Most, but not all, of our undergraduate interns work with us during the summer months, and always during normal
business hours. The ACLU of Illinois does not offer paid internships, though some interns find outside funding.
Undergraduate internships in the Legal Department are clerical in nature. Interns should be prepared to perform
a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, photocopying, envelope stuffing, file indexing, library organizing, archiving, filing documents in
court, and preparing form letters. Somewhat more substantive work is occasionally available, but usually not.
If you are interested in interning with the ACLU, please forward your request in writing to our office.
